春秋战国时期，鲁哀公的身边有一个重臣叫孟武伯，他为人别的地方还行，但有一个最大的毛病，就是自个说过的话不算话，出尔反尔，鲁哀公对他很不满。

有一天，鲁哀公在宫中举行宴会招待群臣，孟武伯和哀公的另一个重臣郑重也参加了这次宴会。孟武伯向来不喜欢郑重，便打定主意，要在宴会上借机出郑重的洋相。郑重体形较为庞大，孟武伯瞅了个空，假意关心道：“哎呀，郑大人你怎么身形越发地横向发展了？这可对身体不好，您要多多注意呀。”郑重听了，并不反驳，只淡然一笑。

鲁哀公听到后，插嘴说道：“一个人常常吃掉自己的诺言，当然会长肥了。”在座的大臣一听，都会心地笑了起来。大家都知道鲁哀公明着是说郑重，实际上是在指责武伯不信守诺言。孟武伯开始也跟着笑，笑着笑着，越发觉得不对劲，慢慢地品出个中之味，再也笑不出来了。

“食言而肥”这个成语就是从此而来，形容说话不算数，不守信用，只图自己便宜。若表示坚决履行诺言，说话一定算数，即为“决不食言”。

有些人说了的话不算数。 可是我仍然相信他是守信用的人，绝对不会因为贪图自己的利益而留下
